Out of all the norse gods Odin was the ruler of the gods and was the god of magic, poetry and war. It was believed he had a son named Balder and a wife named Frigg who was believed to be kind and gentle.

The vikings believed it was better to die in battle rather than in bed as death in battle would result in transportation to valhalla. Valhalla was believed to be a place where great warriors would feast at a long table. Valkyries would escort fallen warriors to Valhalla as well.

Vikings also used to tell stories of a mythical land known as midgar or middle earth. In this land people lived alongside with elves, dwarves and giants. The gods and goddesses were believed to live in a sky world called asgard.

Vikings believed that when a person died he had to be buried with his worldly possessions in order to take them to the next life. Alternatively they could be cremated with their possessions.

It is believed the runes were introduced to the norse people when Odin sacrificed himself. He was pierced by his own spear and hung from a tree called Yggdrasil, as he was hanging he experiences visions of the runes.

The Norse were polytheistic (worshipped many gods) and used stories (known as Norse myths) to explain their gods, goddesses and creatures. These gods lived in a sky world called Asgard.

For example, Freya was the godess of love and beauty. She controlled the golden appples at the top of the world which was the secret to immortalty of the gods.

They believed in 9 different worlds, Midgard (Earth), Álfheimr (world of the elves), Svartálfaheim (world of the black elves), Vanaheimr (world of the 'Vanir', Muspellheim (world of fire), Jötunheimr (world of the giants), Niflheim (world of ice), Asgard (world of the Gods) and Hel (the netherworld)

They believed in Valhalla, which was a hall where the souls of heroes, killed in battle, ruled over by Odin.

They believed in monsters, telling many tales of trolls, dragons and serpants etc.

1. If a warrior was brave and died in battle, they believed that they went to Valhalla, the great hall where there was feasting at long tables. The warriors were said to be brought there by Odin’s warrior maidens and valkyries, riding across the skies.

2. In Norse religion, they believed in many gods, chief of those was Odin. Odins wife was the ‘motherly’ Frigg, and their son was named Balder. Other important gods were Freyja, Freyr, Thor and Loki. All gods had specific properties and looked after different aspects of Norse life.

3. Sacrifice was an important pat of Norse mythology. They believed that sacrifices to the gods would be repaid, bringing them wealth, prosperity, good weather, a good crop, etc. Both human sacrifices and animal were performed.

4. The Norse were very superstitious people. They believed in magic and magical creatures (such as elves and trolls). They believed that people lived in Midguard (middle earth) and that the gods and goddesses lived in Asgard, up in the sky. A rainbow bridge was said to link these two worlds.

5. They believed that the world would end in a final battle called Ragnorok. This battle would be between the giants and the gods. Many of the gods would take sides and kill each other or be killed by other races. A fire would then sweeo across the world killing all races, only leaving just enough to start a new world.

Gods and Goddesses:
The Norse religion consists of many different gods and goddesses with the chief god being Odin. Odin is the highest of all gods and appears in many sagas to help famous heroes and kings. He was the god of magic, poetry and war. Another god was Thor, who was the most popular and who ruled the skies, storms and thunder.

Death and the Afterlife:
Vikings believe that when a warrior dies, they go to Valhalla where a great feast is held at long tables with Odin. For the Viking warriors, it was better to die in battle and go to Valhalla because if they were to die in bed, it was believed that they went to Niflheim, the foggy underworld instead.

Monsters:
Monsters are a common belief in Norse mythology. Some examples of this include Fenrir (the gigantic wolf) and Jormungandr (sea-serpent)

Human Sacrifice:
Sacrifice was commonly practiced in the Norse religion. Human sacrifice to the gods can be divided into 2 types: sacrifice at religious festivals, and retainer sacrifice that was performed at a funeral. It is believed that Odin was associated with death by hanging.

Ragnarok:
Ragnarok is the Norse version of Christianity’s Judgment Day. The belief is that someday, there will be a series of major events, a great battle will take place, an occurrence of various natural disasters and the world will be submerged by fire. Major figures such as the gods Odin and Thor would die during this. Then it is believed that the world would become anew and fertile with the meeting of the surviving gods and repopulation by two surviving humans.

Odin was the main God associated with the Norse and he was the ruler of all the other gods. He was the god of magic, poetry and war as well.

Death at a battle field is considered more honorable for soldiers as this will help u be transported to Valhalla by the gods.

Valhalla is the a place for great feast. Heros or warriors are escorted by Odin's Valkyries to Valhalla and when they arrived they feast with Odin.

Vikings tradition was that when normal people died that they would be burried with their possessions, which meant they would go with them to the next life. It could work the same way if the person was cremated.

The Norse believe in the midgard (Middle earth)which was the home of elves, giants and dwalfs. The Midgard is linked with the realm of the gods by the rainbow bridge. The rainbow bridge was built to protect the humans.
