St Francis was one of seven children born to Pietro di Bernardone (a rich cloth merchant) and Pica Bourlemont.
St Francis was originally called Giovanni di Bernadone (in honour of John the Baptist) in the the hope that he would become a religious leader, however, over his father's fury, he was renamed Francesco.
